Checking (Regensburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The district of Prüing is located in the west of the city of Regensburg near the castle , a former Benedictine monastery, which gives the district its name. The historic districts of Großprüfening on the right bank of the Danube and Kleinprüfening on the left bank of the Danube are located adjacent to the newer part of the city .

geography

The resulting in the 20th century district extends substantially to the area of the subdistrict Outer West and the former racecourse in the subdistrict Midwest in the west of the city of Regensburg.

The district Checking is located on the western outskirts of the district of Westenviertel, district 15 of Regensburg , north of the district of Großprüfening-Dech Betten-Königswiesen . The Outer West extends from the former horse racing track (today: Rennplatz ) in the east to the Danube in the west. In the outer west is the parish church of St. Bonifaz , the elementary schoolprüfunging and a Roman fort on Kornweg, also known as the Roman Park .

history

The area of Großprüfening and the Outer West was, as finds testify, already settled in the Neolithic , Hallstatt and Celtic times. Finds of a fort and a camp village are attested from the Roman period . Since the early Middle Ages there has been a ferry connection across the Danube near Großprüfening, which was first mentioned in writing in 1189. With the construction of the railway lines in 1873/1874, Großprüfening was structurally separated from what is now the Outer West, and the Prüfing station was built. Until the end of the 19th century, the fields and meadows in the outer western Danube arch were still undeveloped. However, old field names and properties already show the names "Niefang" or "Klostergrund", which can still be seen in the street directory today. In 1902, with the support of Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis, the “horse racecourse” (today Rennplatz) was opened west of these fields , which was subsequently developed and thus promoted the development of the area.

In 1907, the shooting range was built to the west of the racing area. In addition to private houses, the so-called "League settlement" was built in 1936 in today's Ligastraße. On April 1, 1938, the Outer West was incorporated into the city of Regensburg together with Großprüfening, Dech Betten and Königswiesen. Due to the recently built Messerschmitt works near the racing area, numerous buildings were affected by the bombings in World War II . In the 1950s to 1970s, there was extensive development in the "Outer West". Today the district of Prüfing in the west quarter is a popular residential area.
