Peat extraction
Mechanized peat extraction goes back at least 200 years and employed 100 to 200 people. As early as 1868, the 3 to 4 m thick peat cover was dismantled over an area of 66 hectares, mostly in the months of May to July. In August they were removed in ox carts on today's nature trail. Around 1900 a (now dilapidated) brickworks on the northern edge of the Kulzer Moos went into operation. When making bricks, peat was also fired from the moor. After 1945 it was given up due to unprofitability, and in 1960/65 so was the use of peat in this area.
Moor nature trail
Today the history of peat cutting is presented in a moor nature trail. This leads on a circular route, partly over wooden walkways, through the moor.
