The pile is a nature reserve near Bodenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf in Bavaria .
The nature reserve is located 8 kilometers west of Neunburg vorm Wald and 7 kilometers north of Bodenwöhr. It is part of the natural park Upper Bavarian Forest , the natural park Oberpfälz forest , the conservation area (LSG) Upper Bavarian Forest and LSGS LSG Northern within the Oberpfälzer forest (formerly protection zone) .
The 173-hectare area comprises a 3-kilometer section of the pile , an approximately 150-kilometer-long dead straight fault line that opens into gaps up to 120 meters wide . In these, liquid rock crystallized out as quartz . In some places the quartz has weathered prominently from the surrounding softer rock and is clearly visible. In the area of the protected area, it delimits the Bodenwöhrer depression sharply to the north.
To the north-west of the observation tower on the Hirschberg summit there is an abandoned quarry in the pile quartz. The multi-phase fracture and re-healing of the quartz rock is clearly visible here. The quarry is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as a valuable geotope quartz quarry on Hirschberg E von Hofenstetten (376A039).
The nature reserve was designated for the first time on August 18, 1939 and again on January 5, 1951 and November 24, 1976 with an amended ordinance.
