The Zizkov Television Tower or TV tower Žižkov ( Žižkovská televizní vEz even Žižkovský vysílač ) in Prague district Žižkov is a publicly accessible TV tower .
location
The tower stands to the east and slightly raised to the center of Prague. The Žižkov Jewish cemetery is located on the north side of the Mahlerovy sady small park where the television tower is located .
description
The unusual structure consists of three 134-meter-high, steel-clad concrete columns on which the rooms for the transmission technology, the viewing platform and the tower restaurant are attached.
The thickest concrete column measures 6.4 meters in diameter; the antenna mast continues at its top. It houses the two visitor elevators. The two smaller ones have a diameter of 4.8 meters. In each of the smaller pillars there is a staff lift and stairs for emergencies. The foundation is 15 meters deep and consists of a 4 meter thick reinforced concrete slab 30 meters in diameter. The calculated maximum deviation from the vertical at the top of the tower is 120 centimeters; Pendulum movements are dampened by special pendulum elements.
The tower, which is open to the public, is 216 meters high and has a tower restaurant at a height of 63 meters and a glazed viewing platform at a height of 93 meters. The tower is used in addition to the distribution of TV and FM - radio programs as an observation tower as well as a meteorological station.
history
Construction of the Prague TV tower began in 1985 and opened on February 18, 1992. The unusual design was deliberately designed as a contrast to the historical buildings in downtown Prague. The architect Václav Aulický remarked:
"Its overall appearance should exclude the possibility of a direct comparison or even competition with the important buildings in the old town from the start."
The stylized sculptures of toddlers crawling around were attached to the columns of the tower in 2000 by the Czech sculptor David Černý . In addition, the pillars are clearly illuminated at night in the national colors of the Czech Republic, white, red and blue.
