Mohyla Míru / Burial Mound of Peace

On the battlefield of the Brno theologian Alois Slovák was on the initiative 1909-1911 grave mounds of Peace ( Mohyla míru ) built. Slovák wanted to convey his idea of peaceful coexistence between peoples. The design comes from Josef Fanta . The 26 m high monument, inaugurated in 1912, was modeled on an Old Slavonic burial mound and is crowned by a copper dome with an Old Slavic cross. At its corners it is surrounded by four statues made by the sculptor Čeněk Vosmík that represent the fighters of the French, Austrian and Russian armies, the fourth figure symbolizes the battlefield.

Inside there is a 10 × 10 m chapel with an altar made of white Carrara marble and a Byzantine mosaic depicting the Madonna with angels . The chapel has special acoustics that make whisper tones audible from the opposite corner. A burial place for the bones found on the battlefield was set up under the chapel. In 1925 a museum wing was inaugurated behind the monument.

The Burial Mound of Peace is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
