Presidential Memorials in the United States
The Presidential Memorials in United States honor the various Presidents of the United States and seek to keep their legacies alive.
Living and physical elements
A Presidential Memorial can be a memorial or a statue within a memorial. It provides a constant reminder of the president it represents. The most famous monuments of this type are the Washington Monument , the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial .
There are also official Presidential Memorials where physical presence only plays a minor role. An example of these vibrant Presidential Memorials is the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars . This is located in a wing of the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC and offers a small exhibition that commemorates the life and work of Wilson. However, it is best known for its work in uniting the world of ideas with the world of politics by promoting science related to issues of contemporary importance. In this way, Wilson's scientific legacy, closely linked to international relations, is perpetuated.
Similarly, the Harry S. Truman Foundation honors American college students who have been involved in public or political spheres. The Truman Foundation is the only Presidential Memorial with no visible memorial and is also the only state memorial in honor of President Truman .
This can also be done by setting up a think tank like the Eisenhower Institute . Its mission is to promote the influence of Eisenhower's intellectual and statesmanlike legacy in the fields of research, public education and public order.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is an example of an official Presidential Memorial that commemorates the president's name not only through the building named after him in Washington DC, but also through the cultural events that take place there.
