Prussian Tower (Bad Suderode)
The Prussian Tower near Bad Suderode in Saxony-Anhalt is an observation tower on the Schwedderberg in the Harz low mountain range . It is registered as a listed building in the local register of monuments .
Geographical location
The Prussian Tower stands on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains on the Schwedderberg, the northwest spur of the Ölbergshöhe ( 320.6 m above sea level ) in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . The latter rises south of Bad Suderode and a little southwest of Gernrode ; both are districts of Quedlinburg .
Architecture and history
The first observation tower on the Schwedderberg was built in 1845. It was called the Prussian Tower and was donated by the Magdeburg book printer owner August Baentsch. In 1885 a 12 meter high replacement building was built. It was demolished after the Second World War in the 1940s because it was dilapidated and used as firewood .
The current tower was built in 1953 as an open timber frame construction and was named Thomas Müntzer Tower. The weather vane on the tower bears the year 1953. The new building was carried out by the Gernrode company Hulsch. The owner of the stick and folding furniture factory located at Bad Suderode train station , Reinhard Jahn, sponsored the construction. After the political change , the tower was given its original name again in 1991 - Prussian Tower. In 2007 the tower was renovated by the Machemehl carpentry, which also included new oak beams.
From its viewing platform , located approximately at the height of the treetops, the view falls to Bad Suderode, Gernrode and Ballenstedt , to the Harz foreland with Quedlinburg and the Halberstadt behind it and also to the Brocken 36 km away . On the platform there is a board on which visual targets in the area are named with distance information.
The tower is included as no. 185 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.
