Prey is the eighth studio album of Metal - band Tiamat . It was published by Century Media in October 2003 .

Origin and style

On Prey , too , Tiamat played a mixture of slow dark rock songs and such medium tempo with influences from other rock subgenres and some Gothic metal elements. All pieces were written by Johan Edlund himself, only The Pentagram is a poem set to music by Aleister Crowley . The album was recorded in Edlund's own studio The Temple of the Crescent Moon as well as in Modern Art Studios with sound engineer Sam Carpenter. It was mixed by TT Oksala in Finnvox Studios in Helsinki . The tracks Cain and Divided later appeared as live versions as bonus tracks from The Scarred People . Sonja Brandt took over the female vocals on Carry Your Cross and I'll Carry Mine .

reception

The album reached number 83 in Germany. Tobias Blum wrote in Rock Hard magazine that the album combined the “ songwriting of the last two Tiamat works with the atmosphere of Wildhoney ”. He particularly praised Carry Your Cross And I'll Carry Mine as the “absolute highlight” of the album. His rating was eight out of ten. John Serba from the website Allmusic.com gave two out of five stars and described the album as "disappointing" and criticized the catchier songs as "awkward and forced": "Dominated by big, droning chords, medium to crawling tempos, and Edlund's clean, sub- Andrew Eldritch / Peter Steele croon, Prey drifts in a sea of contrived depression, and any ill-advised stabs at catchy songwriting - Wings of Heaven, Carry Your Cross and I'll Carry Mine - sound clunky and forced.
