Prifinium bromide is a drug from the group of 3-pyrrolidone derivatives , which belongs to the synthetic parasympatholytics . It is used for spasms of the esophagus , gastrointestinal tract and urinary organs . Currently, only veterinary medicinal products are approved in Germany.

The pharmacological effect corresponds to that of butylscopolamine . It competitively inhibits the action of acetylcholine on the muscarinic receptors , whereby it binds relatively strongly to the receptor subtype M 4 . This leads to an inhibition of the parasympathetic influence on the smooth muscles , the heart muscle , glands and ganglia of the peripheral nervous system . As a quaternary ammonium compound, it only reaches the central nervous system to a very small extent .

Contraindications for use are glaucoma , enlarged prostate , intestinal obstruction , pyloric stenosis and other constrictions in the gastrointestinal tract as well as cardiac arrhythmias with increased heart rate. In the case of liver or kidney diseases, the agent should only be used under strict indications.

A dry oral cavity and dilation of the pupil can occur as side effects .
