The Swedish brand Primus is a manufacturer of portable stoves for camping , outdoor activities and expeditions .
Companies
The company was founded in 1892 by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist and Johan Viktor Svenson . Back then, they built the first soot-free kerosene stove in a garage in Stockholm, which is why they called it Primus (from Latin for "the first"). The traditional Swedish brand is now part of the Swedish group Fenix Outdoor AB ( Fjällräven , Hanwag , Brunton, Tierra, Naturkompaniet, Partioaitta, Globetrotter gear ) and is based in the Stockholm suburb of Solna . Primus sells its products in over 70 countries worldwide.
Pioneers
Salomon August Andrée cooked on Primus in 1897 while attempting to reach the North Pole in a hot air balloon, as did Fridtjof Nansen during his attempt. In 1911, when Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole , he had a Primus stove with him - as did his opponent Robert Falcon Scott . In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay relied on Primus-Kocher for the first ascent of Mount Everest .
Products
The name Primus is often associated with cookers. In Russia it goes so far that the generic term for portable cookers, regardless of make, is “Primus”. The multi-fuel stove OmniFuel is also related to Mount Everest: For an expedition by Sweden's Göran Kropp in 1996, Primus developed the first stove that burned gas, petrol and kerosene. In 1997 this stove came onto the market as the MultiFuel model . Four years later, Primus presented what was then the most versatile stove in the world: the OmniFuel , which is still available, even burns diesel fuel . Primus made another technological advance in 2006 with the introduction of the Eta cooker system. These systems, consisting of a burner, draft shield and pot with heat exchanger, achieve an efficiency of up to 80% instead of the 40 to 45% of conventional cookers. On this basis, Primus built an entire Eta series and defined the Total Weight Concept : Instead of saving weight on the stove, you save on the much heavier - and also fossil - fuel.
Today Primus manufactures stoves for gas ( isobutane - propane mixture from cartridges ) as well as for liquid fuels ( petrol , petroleum , kerosene and diesel). Primus not only manufactures models suitable for expeditions, but also camping stoves. The Primus range also includes gas lamps and lanterns, cutlery sets, pot sets and similar cooking accessories.
