The Freiherrschaft Chimay , one of the twelve "pairies" with a seat and vote in the Curia of the Imperial Palatinate County of Hainaut was elevated to the County of Chimay in 1473 and on April 9, 1486 to the Imperial Principality of Chimay . For a long time it belonged to the older branch of the House of Croÿ (which became extinct in today's princes) before it came to a younger branch of the Arenberg family in 1612 (which became extinct in today's princes) . In 1686 Chimay was inherited by the house of d'Alsace-Henin-Liétard, imperial counts of Boussu (near Mons, Hainaut), whose heir was in turn the de Riquet de Caraman family. The imperial princehood was confirmed on September 4, 1735 for all male and female descendants of Alexander de Chimay, from the Alsace-Hénin-Liétard family.

The first Prince de Chimay from the de Caraman family (Philip VIII, 16th Prince de Chimay) achieved recognition of his imperial title in the Netherlands in 1824, his younger brother in 1827 in the Netherlands and in 1834 in Belgium. The younger line died out in 1973, the older one still exists.
