The Prohibition Party is an American party that opposes the sale of alcohol and was one of the advocates of the abstinence movement .

Although the party was never one of the leading political groups in the United States, it had great influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Party member Susanna M. Salter became the first woman mayor of the United States in 1887 of Argonia , Sumner County , Kansas .

history

National Prohibition Convention 1892 in Cincinnati , Ohio

Founded in 1869, the party achieved some success in banning various types of alcohol, the largest of which was recorded in 1919 when the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed, which ushered in the era of alcohol prohibition . This article prohibited the manufacture, transport, sale, import and export of alcohol. By including Prohibition in the constitution, the Prohibition Party had achieved its main goal and, in the absence of other political issues, its importance subsequently declined. In the public eye, however, the era of prohibition was seen as the great time of organized crime, speakeasies , and smuggling ( rum-running and bootlegging ). When the Great Depression began in 1929, the idea of prohibition had lost much of its popularity with the public and was abolished again in 1933 with the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution . The Prohibition Party lapsed into political insignificance.

The party that existed from 1977–1980 under the name National Statesman Party is still around today. Since it has nominated a candidate for every presidential election since 1872, it is considered the third oldest political party in the United States (after the Republicans and Democrats ). In 2003 there was an internal party dispute over the long-term party chairman Earl Dodge (died 2007).
