The province of Easter Island ( Spanish Provincia de Isla de Pascua ) is one of eight provinces in the Chilean Región de Valparaíso . It extends over an area of 163.6 km² and has 3791 inhabitants (status: 2002 census), 3304 of them in the main town of Hanga Roa itself. It is the only province of Chile that is located in Polynesia and, together with the Chilean Antarctic, the only one outside of South America.

Unlike most of the other departments of Chile, the province is not further subdivided into municipalities, but corresponds to a municipality.

In addition to Easter Island , the province and municipality also include five small uninhabited secondary islands : Motu Iti , Motu Kau Kau and Motu Nui in the southwest, Motu Tautara and Motu Ko Hepoko in the west and Motu Marotiri in the south of the northeastern Poike peninsula. The double island of Salas y Gómez , 400 km further east, is also part of it.

A governor accredited to the Chilean government manages the island. Since 1984 this has always been a local. Since 1966, a 6-person council has been elected every four years in Hanga Roa, one of whom is appointed mayor . About two dozen police officers are stationed on the island and are also responsible for airport security. The Chilean military is particularly present with the navy . The naval station has a patrol boat that is also responsible for sea rescue. The currency is the Chilean peso , the US dollar has meanwhile developed into a minor currency and is accepted everywhere. Easter Island is a duty-free area, so the income from taxes and duties is relatively low. The public budget is heavily subsidized by the Chilean central government .
