Provoked: A True Story is an English film with some Indian actors such as Aishwarya Rai , Naveen Andrews , Nandita Das and Miranda Richardson in the leading roles. The film is based on a true story by Kiranjit Ahluwalia , who recorded her life in the biography "Circle of Light".

action

Kiranjit Ahluwalia is a housewife and mother of two in the UK . At that time she left her homeland India to marry Deepak, who lives in London, and to look to a bright future. However, she is exposed to the brutalities of her alcoholic husband every day. Kiranjit cannot stand the rapes and humiliations for a long time and puts Deepak under fire, who dies from the burns.

Kiranjit is sentenced to 12 years in prison. This case is now also attracting great interest from South Asian social workers who help oppressed women in their association "Southall Black Sisters".

In prison, Kiranjit befriends her cellmate, Veronica Scott, who is teaching her English. She too believes that Kiranjit was wrongly punished so severely and asks her brother Edward Foster QC, a crown attorney , to stand up for Kiranjit's case.

The "Southall Black Sisters" organization has now managed to publicize the case in order to arouse the interest of the citizens who then fight for Kiranjit's release. Ultimately, Kiranjit is released after over 3 years in prison. Provocation with regard to abused women was legally redefined so that Kiranjit's act was classified not as murder but as negligent homicide. Kiranjit's release reunites her with her children and receives an award from Cherie Blair for her successful fight against domestic violence (mentioned in writing at the end of the film).
