Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs or ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ (Album Title in Greek letters) is the fifth studio album of American industrial metal - band Ministry . The album was released on July 14, 1992 and is considered one of the most important works of industrial metal, alongside the two other style-defining previous albums The Land of Rape and Honey and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste .

History of origin

The album title refers directly to the work "The Book of Lies" by the author Aleister Crowley , in it specifically to chapter 69. The title in Greek letters - ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ - comes from the title of this 69th chapter in "The Book of Lies" : Kappa-Epsilon-Phi-Alpha-Lambda-Eta Xi-Theta .

Gibson "Gibby" Haynes, front man of the band Butthole Surfers , made a guest appearance on the album: he was the songwriter and singer on the track Jesus Built My Hotrod .

The extensive use of samples from films and from public appearances by well-known American politicians - Joseph McCarthy , US President George HW Bush or Timothy Leary - is a characteristic feature of the album, in addition to the use of post-industrial and EBM bonds in connection with Thrash metal guitars.

Samples from the following films were used, among others:

The album's commercial success is reflected in gold and platinum awards.

style

The mix of styles presented on Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs represented the musical and stylistic climax of the band's career and contributed significantly to the final development of an entire genre and the typical industrial metal sound. The album is often rated as the band's magnum opus in critical circles.

Single releases

Jesus Built My Hotrod was released as the first single from the album on November 7, 1991 . In addition, NWO was released in July 1992 and Just One Fix on January 21, 1993 as singles.
