The wing nuts ( Pterocarya ) are a genus of plants in the walnut family (Juglandaceae). The genus includes six deciduous tree species that are native to Asia .

description

The wing nuts are deciduous, strong-growing trees . They have alternate, large to very large, pinnate leaves . There are five to 21, rarely to 25 pinna leaflets per leaf present. The leaf margins are serrated. Stipules are missing.

Wingnuts are single sexed ( monoecious ), so set male and female flowers on the same specimen. The male flowers are in short or very long catkins, depending on the species. The male flowers contain five to 18 stamens . Depending on the species, the female flowers stand alone or are grouped on short to very long catkins. The style is short and ends in a two-lobed scar.

The fruits are two-winged wing nuts (Samara).

distribution

The Pterocarya species are native to Asia ; they are found in China , in the Caucasus and in northern Iran, where they are found between an altitude of between 0 and 500 meters.
