Gregor Schmerlin
Gregor Schmerlin ( pseudonyms : Publius Vigilantius , from 1506 also Bacillarius Axungia ; * 1485 in Strasbourg ; † July 1512 between Wimpfen and Ravensburg near Sulzfeld ) was a German humanist and university professor .
Life
Schmerlin's early training is largely empty. It is sometimes suggested that he studied at the University of Tübingen , but no suitable matriculation can be found. On the other hand, there is an entry in the register of the University of Heidelberg from June 20, 1500 that could match him. In 1505 he was enrolled at the University of Erfurt .
In 1506 , at the instigation of Bishop Dietrich von Bülow , Schmerlin was appointed full professor of eloquence at the newly founded University of Frankfurt (Oder) . Even before the university opened in April, he began to give his first lectures in January. He also taught poetics there . In addition to the nephew of Bishop Joachim von Bülow, Ulrich von Hutten and Heinrich Brumann were among his students.
Schmerlin and Johannes Aesticampianus created a good reputation for the new university. However, Schmerlin wanted to improve his Greek and went to Italy with the support of Elector Joachim , who had probably intended him as a teacher for his son Joachim II , and the Chancellor of the university. Between Wimpfen and Ravensburg near Sulzfeld , the 27-year-old professor was brutally attacked and killed by the robbers.
