Puccinia trixitis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the composites Trixis radialis . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. She is endemic to Guatemala .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia trixitis can only be recognized with the naked eye by the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia trixitis grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are not yet known. The uredia of the fungus growing underneath the leaves are dark chestnut brown. Their golden to light brown uredospores are 26–32 × 21–26 µm in size, broadly ellipsoidal to spherical and spiky. The parts of the species that grow underneath the leaves are chestnut brown, compact and uncovered. The golden-brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ovate to ellipsoidal and 28–37 × 18–20 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 50 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia trixitis includes Guatemala and Veracruz in Mexico.

ecology

The host plant of Puccinia trixitis is Trixis radialis . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
