Career highlights and awards

Clarence Edward "Pug" Manders (* 5. May 1913 in Milbank , South Dakota ; † 20th January 1985 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American American football player . He played fullback in the National Football League (NFL) with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Yanks , and in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) with the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills .

Player career

Pug Manders studied at Drake University from 1936 to 1938 . In the football team of the "Drake Bulldogs" he played in defense as a linebacker and in the offense as fullback. Upon graduation, Manders received a professional contract from Shipwreck Kelly , owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played as a fullback on the New York City team until 1944 . In 1940 and 1941, under coach Jock Sutherland, he and his team only narrowly failed to make it into the NFL championship game . After the Dodgers ceased playing in 1944, Manders moved to the Boston Yanks to join the New York Yankees a year later, who played in the newly formed AAFC. The Yankees were looked after by Ray Flaherty . Manders managed to move into the AAFC final with the team. Opponents in the game were the Cleveland Browns , who won 14: 9. After three games with the Buffalo Bills in the 1947 season, Manders ended his career. Manders achieved an NFL annual best in 1941 with 486 yards of space gained by running play.

Honors

Clarence Manders played three times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He has been elected to the All Pro three times and is a member of the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame .

Others
