The Puy de la Bannière is an extinct volcano ( cinder cone ) in the French department of Puy-de-Dôme ( Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region ).

geography

The Puy de la Bannière is located in the immediate vicinity of the western edge fault of the Limagnegraben and, at 733 meters above sea level, towers over the Volvic , which is 494 meters above sea level , and of which it belongs to the municipality. Tournoël Castle was built on a rock spur on the north side of the volcano at 594 meters above sea level . On the east side, the mountain is surrounded by municipalities of the Limagnegraben such as Malauzat (village of Saint-Genest-l'Enfant ), Marsat , Mozac and Riom . Immediately to the south, the center of Volvic nestles directly against the volcano.

geology

The Puy de la Bannière is a pure cinder cone of Trachyandesite composition that has not emitted any lava in the course of its activity . In contrast to the fresh-looking volcanic cones such as the Puy Pariou , its outlines are already quite eroded - which only confirms its somewhat advanced age. It is located not far to the west of the main marginal fault of the Limagnegraben and is clearly separated from the main chain of the Chaîne des Puys, which runs about 6 kilometers further west. Strictly speaking, it no longer belongs to the Chaîne des Puys, but is still mostly counted among it. It should not be a coincidence that the Puy de la Bannière penetrated at the intersection of several faults through the granitic basement - on the north-northeast (N 020) and south-southeast (N 160) system, which is also realized on the main marginal fault and subordinate at the intersection of the directions North-South and Northwest-Southeast.

History

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde statue on the Puy de la Bannière

In 1751, Jean-Étienne Guettard climbed the Puy de la Bannière with Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes and determined its volcanic origin for the first time on the basis of the cone shape, the scoria and the central funnel-shaped crater.

In 1861, the École d'architecture de Volvic ( Volvic School of Architecture) laid out a Way of the Cross at the Puy de la Bannière. It connects the center of Volvic with the southern mountain flank, on which Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde , a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary made of Volvic stone was placed. With both of her arms outstretched, she blesses the city.
