PD Ouspensky

PD Ouspensky ( Russian Пётр Демьянович Успенский , transcription Pyotr Demjanowitsch Uspenski, scientific. Transliteration Pëtr Dem'janovič Uspensky , even Peter or Pyotr D. Ouspensky ; * 4. March 1878 in Moscow , † 2. October 1947 in Lyne Place , Surrey ) was one Russian , and later in England acting esoteric writers , of an important disciple of George Gurdjieff and as such one of the main representatives of the so-called Fourth way was.

Life

Ouspensky took an early interest in literature and mathematics . In 1905 he wrote his first novel The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin . A short time later he began to be interested in the theosophical literature, which was forbidden in what was then Russia . Subsequently he dealt with the question of how a synthesis between science, religion and mysticism could be brought about. This was followed by extensive trips to the Orient and Egypt . Back in Saint Petersburg , he devoted himself to the study of yoga , magic and occultism .

This phase was followed by further trips through India and Ceylon . His goal was to find a school where he could learn “the hidden laws of our world and the universe”. However, due to the outbreak of World War I , he returned to Moscow in 1915 and met Georges I. Gurdjieff in Petersburg. He was convinced that he had found a teacher in Gurdjieff who could impart the knowledge he was looking for. This encounter ultimately resulted in an intensive collaboration lasting several years. Due to the turmoil of the October Revolution , Gurdjieff and a group of his students, including Ouspensky, traveled through various countries to Constantinople , where both paths parted in 1920.

Ouspensky's more formal-mathematical thinking ultimately led to tensions between him and his teacher Gurdjieff, who founded the Institute for the Harmonic Development of Man in Fontainebleau near Paris in 1922 . Ouspensky finally broke with Gurdjieff in 1924, but remained true to his teachings and worked in London with his own group of students to understand the teachings mainly presented by Gurdjieff in the years 1915 to 1918 and to supplement missing areas. In Search of the Wonderful , one of his most famous works, in which he presents Gurdjieff's teachings , also dates from this time .
