Pyraichmes (Paionier)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pyraichmes ( Greek  Πυραίχμης , Latin Pyraechmes "the fire lance") is a figure in Greek mythology .

Pyraichmes was the leader of the Paionians , who came to the aid of the Trojans with his contingent from Amydon and took part in the Trojan War on their side .

In the extended version of the Iliad by Timolaos by Larisa from the 3rd century BC At the first meeting of the opposing camps in the battle for the Greek ships, he kills Eudoros , the son of Hermes . Achilles himself had classified Eudorus as protection and as warner ( μνήμων ) of Patroclus . Then Patroclus was the first to kill Pyraichmes, as the Iliad also tells us. At Dictys he dies at the hand of Diomedes . He was buried in Troy.

Because in the Iliad on the one hand Asteropaios , son of Pelegon and grandson of the river god Axios , is named as the leader of the Paionians and played a more important role in the Iliad , on the other hand Pyraichmes himself came from the banks of the Axios to Troy, this contradiction was attempted to solve different explanations. It was suggested in ancient times that Asteropaios only took over the leadership role after the death of Pyraichmes. Modern attempts saw both persons as identical or interpolated the first mention in the Iliad .
