Qumbu [ k!umbu ] is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the seat of the municipality of Mhlontlo in the OR Tambo district .

geography

In 2011, Qumbu had 4928 inhabitants (2011 census). 90% of the population speak isiXhosa as their first language . The city is about 60 kilometers north of Mthatha .

history

Qumbu was founded in 1876. The place name comes from the isiXhosa term amazimba aqumbu , German for example: "The grain has germinated" or "The grain has swollen", which indicates a tribal war at the time of the foundation. Until 1994 Qumbu belonged to the Homeland Transkei .

Infrastructure

Qumbu is on National Route 2 , which among other things connects Mthatha with Mount Frere to the north . The R396 runs from Tsolo via Qumbu to Maclear .
