The Réserve écologique G.-Oscar-Villeneuve is a protected area established in 1989 on an area of 567 hectares in the south of the Canadian province of Québec in the regional county municipality of Le Fjord-du-Saguenay .
It is located on the north side of Sainte-Marguerite , 5 km northeast of the commune of Sainte-Rose-du-Nord and 3 km northwest of Lac Résimond . It represents and protects the forests typical of the Contreforts des Laurentides ecoregion , Saguenay and Laurentides mountains of the Rivière Jacques-Cartier , in which the paper birch and the yellow birch dominate.
The rugged reserve is between 165 and 640 m above sea level. The subsoil of the administrative region Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean consists predominantly of Precambrian migmatite , on which tillite was deposited during and after the last ice age . Podsol was created, interspersed with rock and stone and is extremely lean.
In the lower zones, yellow birch, sugar maple , balsam fir and black ash predominate, further up next to yellow birch, mainly paper birch and black spruce .
The fauna is typical of the region, the most noticeable species are the snowshoe hare ( Lepus americanus ), collar grouse , the American red squirrel ( Tamiasciurus hudsonicus ), various hawks and sparrowhawks , passerines , finches and woodpeckers . The largest mammals are elk and white-tailed deer .
The name of the area goes back to the botanist Georges-Oscar Villeneuve (1914–1982), one of the most important and earliest meteorologists in Québec. He was a member of the Société linnéenne de Québec and the Société zoologique du Québec . In 1943 he published a study on the forest meteorology of the province, he dealt with protection from fire and extended this question to various areas.
