The Réserve écologique Lionel-Cinq-Mars is a protected area established in 1988 on an area of ​​440 hectares in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It is located in the county of Lotbinière about 50 km southwest of the provincial capital Québec on the north bank of the Rivière Huron. It is located in the territory of the communes of Saint-Édouard-de-Lotbinière and Leclercville and protects the linden and yellow birch forests typical of the region .

The area is located between the Appalachian Mountains and the lowlands of the St. Lawrence River . The substrate consists of so-called Shales , metamorphic rocks, which are characterized by cleavage distinguished, which is to sedimentary rocks and clay minerals can act. There is also limestone , dolomite , sandstone and slate . With the retreat of the post-glacial Champlain Sea , sand and clay minerals were deposited over the glacial Tillit . Thereafter, the tides formed river terraces . Podzol and soils with a high proportion of organic residues characterize the region.

The sugar maple , the American linden and the white ash are the most common tree species. There are also yellow birch , red maple , occidental tree of life ( thuya ), black ash and American elm . Allium tricoccum (French: Ail des bois, 'forest garlic') is considered threatened .

The name goes back to the specialist in plant diseases and botanist Lionel Cinq-Mars (1919–1973). He became a professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at Laval University in 1962, and he set up a herbarium of more than 10,000 copies, which has been called Herbier Louis-Marie since 1968. He published more than 70 articles - including on ornithology - and founded the specialist journals Ludoviciana and Provancheria . Since 1978 an award of the Canadian Botanical Society has been named after him. A species of the rock pear genus bears his name: Amelanchier Quinti-Martii (English: Cinq Mars' Serviceberry).
