particularities Römerstein Tower ( AT )

The Römerstein is a mountain in the Swabian Alb . It lies on the plateau of the Middle Kuppenalb , the highest point of which it is at 874.4  m above sea level. Represents NHN . He is also the namesake of the municipality of Römerstein in the Reutlingen district , on whose territory it is located.

Although the Romans settled in Donnstetten immediately east of the mountain between 85 and 260 AD (see Fort Donnstetten ), the name is not derived from them, but from the name of the Rem family who lived in the area as early as the 14th century was resident. The wooded top of the mountain rises on average only about 70 meters above its immediate surroundings, but thanks to its location near the north-west Albtrauf , above the deeply cut Lenninger Lautertal , and due to the plateau sloping to the south, it offers an excellent all-round view.

Roman stone tower

At the highest point of the mountain is the 28 meter high Roman stone tower . This was built in 1912 by the Swabian Alb Association after collecting donations after a surveying scaffold that was released for inspection in 1899 had to be demolished in 1904. The tower was designed as a boarded wooden structure on a solid base. The construction cost 9500 marks at that time. From its viewing platform above the treetops, one overlooks the Lautertal and the Alb foreland to the north as far as the Kaiser Mountains . In the northeast the upper Filstal can be seen, in the other directions the Alb plateau.

The tower is open in the warm seasons on weekends and public holidays, at its feet there are two barbecue areas and play equipment for children.
