Notice board at Bad Zurzach Castle Park

The Roman military camp Zurzach was a Roman military camp in what is now Bad Zurzach in the canton of Aargau on the grounds of the park of the Zurzach Castle .

history

The military camp, built of wooden palisades and earth walls, stood on an important Roman road from Vindonissa to Arae Flaviae from around 10 to 50 AD. After the conquest of the areas on the right bank of the Rhine, it was no longer needed. An archaeological excavation took place from 1983 to 1987. Today there is a lawn here. Finds are exhibited in the Museum Höfli . A civilian settlement was built around the military camp and there was probably also a first crossing of the Rhine, although the Dangstetten Roman camp opposite already existed. In late Roman times, the Romans built the Kirchlibuck-Sidelen double fort up the Rhine .
