The reddish or flesh-red gelatinous funnel ( Tremiscus helvelloides , syn. Guepinia helvelloides and Phlogiotis helvelloides ) is a species of fungus with an unclear family affiliation ( Incertae sedis ) within the order of the ear- flap fungus-like (Auriculariales).

features

Macroscopic features

The fruiting body of the reddish gelatinous funnel looks like a funnel cut or halved on one side. He is about 2-15 centimeters high. The edge of the hat is wavy, lobed, sharp-edged and curved downwards; the surface is smooth and bare. Young specimens are bright orange-red, with age they become dull reddish. On the outside, the hymenium covers the fruiting bodies, visible as a violet hint. The flesh is of a similar reddish color to the outside and has a soft, gelatinous consistency. It has no smell or taste to speak of. The basidia are divided by longitudinal walls. The spore powder is whitish and inamyloid .

Microscopic features

The spores are often slightly curved and elliptical in shape. They measure 8–12 × 4–8 micrometers and have a smooth surface.

Species delimitation

Confusion with other mushrooms is hardly possible. Other tremors such as the trembling tooth have fewer bent fruit bodies and differ in other characteristics.

ecology

The reddish gelatinous funnel is a saprobiontic , wood-decomposing soil dweller who mainly inhabits lime and base-rich soils in freshly drained to moist locations over lime, lime sand, limestone marl, basalt and other base-rich rocks and corresponding raw soils. After lime fertilization or on the edge of paths graveled with limestone and in very rainy areas, it can also occur on actually acidic subsoil. The reddish jelly funnel usually grows near stumps or roots that are covered with earth, sometimes (on very calcareous subsoil) also on wood from conifers and hardwoods lying above ground. On particularly rainy, higher slopes with little vegetation, it can also occur on raw soils with little base, presumably due to the low competitive pressure. The species fructifies mainly in areas with abundant summer rain, from July to October, where it grows in coniferous and mixed coniferous forests, in coniferous plantations, and more rarely in pure deciduous forests.

distribution

The reddish gelatinous funnel is found in the Holarctic , it is found in the USA, Canada, eastern Siberia and Japan. It is particularly common in high altitudes up to the mountains, and in the lowlands it is rare or absent. Its main European distribution area extends from the southern European mountain ranges (Catalonia, Corsica, northern Italy, Serbia, Greece, Romania) to around the 51st parallel (Saxony, Thuringia, southern Poland), north of which there are only a few stray finds as far as Great Britain, Norway, Gotland and ins Baltic states. For Baden-Württemberg, Krieglsteiner indicated a strong decline in the species due to drainage measures and eutrophication of the forests.

meaning

The red jelly funnel can also be eaten raw, although its reputation as an edible mushroom is poor. It has no special taste, but can be used as a filling mushroom. In some places it is sold in the market.
