RH Quaytman

RH Quaytman (* 1961 in Boston , Massachusetts , actually Rebecca Howe Quaytman ) is a painter and installation artist .

life and work

RH Quaytman is the daughter of the writer Susan Howe and the abstract painter Harvey Quaytman . The family moved to SoHo in 1963 . From the age of four, her mother lived with the painter David von Schlegell , whom she later married. The author Mark von Schlegell is her half-brother. She traces her artistic roots back to her father and stepfather. In 1995 she married the filmmaker Jeff Preiss .

Quaytman studied until 1983 ( BA ) at Bard College . She then studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and at the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (with Daniel Buren and Pontus Hultén ) in Paris until 1984 . In the mid-1990s she worked as an assistant to Dan Graham .

In 2001 Quaytman began to lay out all of her paintings according to a certain system. She calls the resulting series chapters . She often paints these series on modular wooden panels. These are mostly presented on shelves and function as chapters in a running book.

Quaytman exhibits nationally and internationally. Mention should be made of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Art Institute of Chicago , the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, as well as at the Biennale di Venezia in 2011 and at documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens in 2017 .
