RMS Jazz Orchestra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RMS JazzOrchester is a big band and as such a course offered by the Rheinische Musikschule Köln , which is aimed at advanced instrumentalists. The line-up is typical for jazz big bands: trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section

history

In 1971 Karel Krautgartner founded the "Seminar for Popular Music" at the Rheinische Musikschule (RMS). This seminar was the first of its kind in the Federal Republic of Germany; It was therefore very attractive and made a significant contribution to the development of Cologne's jazz scene. As part of this seminar, Krautgartner also started a big band. Initially their name was "Big Band of the Rheinische Musikschule". This name was changed to "RMS JazzOrchester" when the RMS later introduced another big band class. Karel Krautgartner directed the RMS Jazz Orchestra until 1975. His successor was Jiggs Whigham , who in turn was replaced in 1986 by Michael Villmow .

Working method

The task of the RMS Jazz Orchestra is to maintain the classic big band repertoire with pieces by musicians such as Sammy Nestico , Thad Jones and Duke Ellington as well as to work out more modern compositions and arrangements such as by Pat Metheny , Bob Mintzer , Peter Herbolzheimer and bandleader Michael Villmow. The stylistic spectrum is expanded by guest lecturers (e.g. Gabriel Pérez , Jiggs Whigham and Jens Böckamp ), who each rehearse and perform their own pieces with the band. Regular weekly rehearsals (except during the school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia ) and several appearances per year ensure the unbroken continuity of the band since it was founded.

Many former members of the RMS Jazz Orchestra have become professional musicians. Thanks to this and the close contacts to the Bundesjazzorchester and the WDR Big Band , the RMS Jazzorchester is able to attract renowned musicians as guest soloists for joint performances, such as the trumpeter Andy Haderer , the saxophonists Heiner Wiberny , Paul Heller and Denis Gäbel , the guitarist Bruno Müller.

Over the years some musicians have emerged from the RMS Jazz Orchestra who have garnered international attention. They include Markus Stockhausen , Till Brönner and Volker Götze .
