Jens Böckamp (born January 13, 1986 in Dormagen ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , composition).

Live and act

Böckamp received classical clarinet lessons from 1995. First orchestral experiences followed. At the age of 14 he learned the saxophone and played in the music school big band; Klaus Jakobi and Reinhard Glöder introduced him to jazz . Lessons with Paul Heller , Peter Less , John Ruocco and Phil Woods followed, as well as numerous workshops. From 2003 he was a young student at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Wolfgang Engstfeld . From 2005 to 2010 he studied at the Cologne Music Academy with Claudius Valk and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Mikko Innanen ; He completed his diploma with distinction and completed a master's degree in jazz composition / arrangement with Frank Reinshagen and Joachim Ullrich at the Cologne University of Music.

From 2005 to 2007 Böckamp was a member of the JugendJazzOrchester NRW ; then he was part of the concert line-up of the Federal Jazz Orchestra until 2010 and was involved in two of the formation's albums. He also led his own quintet, with which he presented his first album in 2009. Together with Janning Trumann and Johannes Ludwig , he founded the big band Subway Jazz Orchestra in 2013 , which performs at least once a month. He also runs the FLOATmusic label with Ludwig . He also belonged to the groups of Riaz Khabirpour , Maxime Bender , Anne-Christine Heinrich and the Thonline Orchestra , with whom he also released albums. He also worked with Katja Riemann , re: jazz , Tom Gäbel , Manfred Schoof , Eva Mayerhofer and Nicolas Simion and went on concert tours to various European countries and India.

In 2005 Böckamp was the first winner of the Jugend jazzt competition and a finalist in the international Yamaha Saxophone Contest . In 2013 he received first prize at the BuJazzO composition competition in the category “Big Band + Vocal Ensemble”. In the same year he won the audience award with his Flow Quartet at the Tremplin Jazz d'Avignon Festival . In 2017 he was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize in the composition category.
