Raban Tilmann CO (born June 16, 1940 in Hamburg ; † December 19, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German Roman Catholic religious . From 1985 to 1993 he was vicar general and cathedral capitular of the Limburg diocese and from 1997 to 2009 city ​​dean of Frankfurt am Main.

Live and act

Tilmann wanted to be a priest as a child. He graduated from high school in Mannheim and later came to Frankfurt. He studied Catholic theology at the St. Georgen University of Philosophy and Theology there , but also for six years in Würzburg and one year in Paris . He joined the Oratorian Congregation of St. Philipp Neri and was ordained a priest in Limburg in 1965 . In 1971 the doctorate to Dr. theol. in Catholic theology. 1966 to 1982 he worked as a priest in Frankfurt's north end .

From 1982 to 1985 he served as a university pastor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. As vicar general and cathedral capitular in the diocese of Limburg from 1985 to 1993 he was entrusted with the administration of the diocese and represented the then diocesan bishop Franz Kamphaus .

From 1997 to 2009 he was the city dean and episcopal commissioner for Frankfurt. He took part in a demonstration against right-wing extremists and for the construction of the Hazrat Fatima Mosque in Frankfurt-Hausen . He dealt with homosexuals impartially, but, in agreement with Bishop Tebartz-van Elst , prevented the city ​​assembly of Frankfurt Catholics from taking a position on the blessing of homosexual couples.

Since his retirement as city dean, the 2.08 m tall Tilmann lived with his fellow brothers in the oratorio in Frankfurt am Main. He was a member of the Catholic student union KStV Normannia Würzburg. Tilmann died on December 19, 2017 at the age of 77 after a long illness in the presence of the incumbent Frankfurt city dean Johannes zu Eltz and his predecessor Klaus Greef , who donated the sacraments to him.
