Raban Carl Ludwig Adrian August Maria Graf von Helmstatt (* December 21, 1844 in Neckarbischofsheim ; † November 24, 1932 in Hochhausen ) was lord of the castle at Hochhausen Castle and owner of the Tiefburg in Handschuhsheim , which he had extensively renovated from 1911 to 1913. He was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly .

Life

He came from the Oberöwisheim branch of the Lords of Helmstatt and was the eldest son of Maximilian von Helmstatt (1810-1893) and Augustine Freiin von Leoprechting (1823-1905). With his siblings Henriette (1843-1892) and Viktor (1851-1935), he spent most of his childhood in Neckarbischofsheim. In winter the family lived in the von Leoprechting family's town house in Mannheim . In Mannheim he also attended the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium , after which he studied law in Munich . His roommate in his student apartment was the future Bavarian King Ludwig III.

His French title "Comte de Morhange " (Count of Mörchingen) was inherited from his ancestors . From 1870 he was married to Gabriele von Falckenstein (1853–1927), with whom he had six children. From 1873 the couple lived in Hochhausen Castle, which Raban expanded to include a large two-story hall. His brother Viktor, meanwhile, lived in the Freiadlige estate in Handschuhsheim. When his mother died in 1905, Viktor moved to Neckarbischofsheim and had the estate in Handschuhsheim run by a manager, later Raban's eldest son Bleickard von Helmstatt (1871–1952) moved into the property. From 1911 to 1913, Raban von Helmstatt had the ruins of the Handschuhsheimer Tiefburg, located next to the aristocratic estate and owned by the family since the 17th century, extensively renovated. The castle's residential building was also made usable again.

As a representative of the manorial nobility, Raban von Helmstatt belonged to the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly , from 1875 to 1890 above the Murg and from 1895 to 1912 below the Murg.

He lived in the castle in Hochhausen until his death, and was blessed with remarkable health into old age. His wife was less healthy, and in old age she went blind despite some eye operations. In 1930 his son Bleickard moved with his wife to Raban in Hochhausen and took over the management of the family property.

The eldest son Bleickard von Helmstatt (1871–1952) was married to Klara von Bodman (1885–1967) and in 1950 sold the Tiefburg to the city of Heidelberg as the last Handschuhsheim property. Other descendants of Raban von Helmstatt were Franz von Helmstatt (1874–1956), Ludwig von Helmstatt (* October 5, 1876, † August 29, 1915 in Dywin, Russia) and the three daughters Auguste (1873–1962), Hildegard (1880 –1968) and Gertrud (1884–1963).
