The Race Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse on the coast of the US state Massachusetts in New England in Barnstable County .
geography
The lighthouse is located in the area of the city of Provincetown at the northwest end of the Cape Cod peninsula at the entrance to Massachusetts Bay . The location of the tower in the middle of the dunes also forms the northwestern end of the National Seashore Cape Cod National Seashore .
history
The first lighthouse at Race Point was the third on Cape Cod. It was erected in 1816 as a rubble building and was one of the first to have a rotating beacon. In 1858 it was fitted with a fourth order Fresnel lens . In 1874 a second lighthouse keeper's house was built, followed in 1875 by the construction of a new tower made of iron segments clad with bricks and the construction of the first keeper's house. The lighthouse was electrified in 1957. The foghorn station was replaced by a coal-fired steam generator with a diesel generator. In 1978 the operation of the lighthouse and foghorn were automated.
The light from the tower has a range of 16 nautical miles (approximately 30 km).
Use of the outbuildings
The old guard's house was demolished in 1960. The smaller house was renovated in 1995 with funds from the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation , as was the Nebelhornhaus. Both buildings can be rented for tourist purposes.
The Race Point Lighthouse was registered in 1987 as a Race Point Light Station in the National Register of Historic Places under the number 87001482 as part of the Multiple Property Submission Lighthouses of Massachusetts MPS .
