Rafael Llano Cifuentes (born February 18, 1933 in Mexico City , † November 28, 2017 in Tijuca near Rio de Janeiro ) was a Mexican clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Nova Friburgo .

Life

Rafael Llano Cifuentes lived in Cuba for some time during his childhood and later moved to Spain. He studied civil law at the University of Salamanca, where he also 1959 Dr. jur. received his doctorate. He joined the personal prelature Opus Dei and was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959 in Rome after studying philosophy and theology . He received his doctorate in canon law at the Roman Angelicum . From 1961 he worked for Opus Dei in pastoral work in Brazil. He was chaplain of the university parish in São Paulo and professor at the EPD - Paulista School of Law (Faculdade Paulista de Direito EPD).

Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 4, 1990 auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Mades . The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José Gonçalves da Costa CSsR , Archbishop of Niterói , and José Fernandes Veloso , Bishop of Petrópolis . His episcopal motto was Omnia traham ad meipsum . He was also appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. He was responsible for family pastoral care, youth pastoral care and university pastoral care as well as responsible for charismatic renewal and evangelization. For many years he was the head of the Encontros Jovem-Rio , an organization for the preparation and participation of young people in the World Youth Days.

On May 12, 2004, he was appointed Bishop of Nova Friburgo by John Paul II and was introduced to the office on June 20 of the same year. He was President of the Commission on Life and Family in the Bishops' Conference (2003–2007). Rafael Llano Cifuentes was Professor of Marriage Law at the Instituto Superior de Direito Canônico in Rio de Janeiro. In 2008 he became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy.

On January 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Rafael Llano Cifuentes has published numerous books and articles.
