Rafael Palau i March
Rafael Palau i March , OSB , (* 1810 in Mataró , † 1890 in La Garriga ) was a Catalan organist , choirmaster and composer . Rafael Palau was head of the Escolania de Montserrat in 1835 .
life and work
Rafael Palau attended the Escola de Montserrat from 1821 to 1826 . Here he was a student of Jacint Boada and Benet Brell . In 1826 he entered the Benedictine order as a monk. In 1835 he was appointed Master of Escolania de Montserrat . He replaced Benet Brell in this position. A few months later the monastery community was dissolved due to the political situation.
Palau emigrated to France and became an organist at the diocese of Montpellier . Here he cast a spell over many people with his talent for musical improvisation. In 1851 the Escolania de Montserrat was re-established. In 1853 the position of Master of Escolania was filled with Jacint Boada. After returning to Montserrat, he was initially assistant to Jacint Boada in the musical direction of Escolania . Palau left the monastery and then became organist in Granollers and then in Caldes de Montbui .
Palau wrote masses , motets , symphonies , sonatas and fugues .
