Rafael Seligmann , also: Raphael und Seligman , Seeligmann , Zeligmann (born June 1875 in Minsk , Russian Empire ; died September 3, 1943 in Tel Aviv ) was a Russian-German journalist and translator into Yiddish .

Life

Seligmann came from a rabbi family and studied philosophy in Switzerland from 1900 , where he received his doctorate in 1911. After the end of the First World War, he lived in Berlin and was a member of the staff of the Yiddish weekly newspaper Der Freitag and wrote for the magazines Der Jude , Die Jewish Welt (Wilna), Die Zukunft , Das neue Leben and the Sozialist Monatshefte .

Seligmann also wrote in German. In the 1920s he translated for Yiddish publishers that had settled in Berlin after the Russian Revolution . a. Henri Barbusse ( Clarté ), Gustave Flaubert ( Hérodias ), Ricarda Huch ( Das Judengrab ), a book by Jakob Klatzkins about Hermann Cohen , Moses Gaster translated from English about the marriage contract, Prosper Mérimée ( Carmen ), excerpts from the Roman history of Theodor Mommsen , Tao Te King from Laotse , as well as aphorisms from Epiktet and a work by Franz Landsberger on impressionism and expressionism in Yiddish. He also translated into Hebrew .

After the handover of power to the National Socialists , Seligmann had to emigrate to Palestine .
