Life

Hug grew up with his four siblings, including his brother Wolfgang Hug , as the son of the honorary citizen Franz Hug and his wife Hilda in Stühlingen. He learned to play the organ and piano at an early age and developed his passion for church music. After completing elementary school, he moved to the Konradihaus in Konstanz , where he attended Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium . After graduating, he studied theology in Munich and Freiburg and was ordained a priest in 1960 by Auxiliary Bishop Hermann Schäufele . He then worked in pastoral care for three years until he went to Vienna in 1963 to study church music there and to do his training as organ concert master and conductor with Hans Gillesberger , Hans Swarowsky and Hans Haselböck . He then studied musicology in Innsbruck and Basel.

In 1969 he was appointed cathedral music director in Freiburg and founded the Freiburg Cathedral Choir School with the Freiburg Cathedral Choir Boys in 1970 and the Girls' Choir at Freiburg Cathedral in 1973. The Choralschola was founded in 1976 and the Cathedral Chapel was founded in 1981. He went on several concert tours with all of the choirs and published several television, radio and CD productions with them. Hug was the cathedral music director and director of the cathedral singing school until his retirement in 2003.
