The Rain Parade is an American band from San Francisco that existed in the early 1980s to the mid 1980s. She released various records in the style of psychedelia and guitar rock , influenced by 1960s bands, such as The Byrds , Pink Floyd , Love , Buffalo Springfield , the New York group Television and the Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young .

In addition to Plan 9 from Rhode Island , Plasticland from Milwaukee and Three O'Clock from Los Angeles , The Rain Parade were the classic representatives of neo-psychedelia , which later reached its commercial peak with rave and acid house, especially in England.

The group belonged to the Paisley Underground in Los Angeles , which was characterized by close personal ties with the other bands ( Dream Syndicate , Bangles , Long Ryders , Green on Red , True West).

With Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, the group had two very good songwriters, who also took turns in the lead vocals and always produced a varied sound.

The debut album Emergency Third Rail Power Trip was released in England , where a neo psychedelia revival took place in the early 1980s . Fanzines , such as Bucketfull of Brains , were significantly involved here and, like the English music press, cheered the unusual sound of Rain Parade.

The 1984 mini-LP Explosions in the Glass Palace was compositionally more mature and better produced and contained, among other things, the classics You Are My Friend and the mantra- like No Easy Way Down .

The popularity of the paisley underground extended to Japan . Rain Parade went on tour there and the resulting live album Beyond the Sunset was first released on Enigma Records and later on Island Records . Steve Wynn and Dennis Duck of Dream Syndicate guested on Cheap Wine . In Musikexpress / Sounds 9/85, Michael Ruff praised the “cloudy, psychedelic world of sound” Rain Parades as well as “their dreamlike Syd Barrett- inspired nursery rhyme lyrics, to which guitars, keyboards, violin, bass and drums sound as if they were wearing kid gloves played ".

After being signed to Island Records by Ian Matthews, the band released the LP Crashing Dream , which was voted Record of the Month in 1985 by New Musical Express / Sounds . Despite excellent reviews and a tour of Germany with Robyn Hitchcock , the band failed to meet the record company's commercial expectations and was released from their contract, which meant the end for Rain Parade.

While colleagues like REM soon became commercially successful, especially in the alternative college radio sector, Rain Parade always remained only critics' favorites, although there was certainly commercial potential.

David Roback left the band after the first LP and formed Clay Allison with Kendra Smith (ex- The Dream Syndicate ), who became Opal and Mazzy Star . Ironically, this project was far more commercially successful than its ex-band.

Matt Piucci published after the end of Rain Parade a duo record with Tim Lee (The Wind Breakers ) and founded with Steven Roback Viva Saturn , which for Heyday Records / Normal Records made recordings.

Matt Piucci recorded a solo CD for the label of Russ Tolman and Pat Thomas in 2000 and later got on for a CD with the Neil Young band Crazy Horse .

John Thoman later played in the band of Chris Cacavas .

Will Glenn (real name: William Cooper Glenn) joined Opal as keyboard player after the end of Rain Parade Opal and died on March 16, 2001 after illness (liver damage).
