The Rainerkaserne , also known as Kaserne Glasenbach , is located in Elsbethen , a place south of the city of Salzburg . The name Rainerkaserne is derived from the Salzburg house regiment Archduke Rainer No. 59 .

founding

The Rainer Barracks is the only military facility that was built entirely during the Nazi era between 1938 and 1940 and has largely been preserved in its original state. It was built in the alpine style, i. H. Typical alpine designs and style elements, such as those found in farms (roofs, shutters, fencing walls, wooden balconies, etc.) were used. In addition, high-quality marble portals and interior fittings made of marble (e.g. marble columns in the dining room) were created. The barracks is a "vivid example of the military architecture of the Nazi regime".

A farm building with a kitchen and dining room is located next to the entrance to the barracks in the east. The main barracks buildings (team building and sports hall) are arranged around a central parade ground. In the south there is a sports field, which is bordered by a U-shaped building. Horse stables were once housed in this; today there is also a cafeteria here. In the subsequent part of a military exercise takes parcours and a former fire water pond , which was also used for bathing. In front of it are the historically valuable horse pond and the soldiers' church, which is open to the general public on public holidays. In the western part of the barracks there are workshops, storage and garage buildings.

Camp Truscott

After May 8, 1945, the barracks were taken over by the USFA (United States Forces in Austria) . The Glasenbach barracks received the name Camp Truscott on July 18, 1947, named after the fallen captain of the Rainbow Division, Al Truscott. The unveiling of the name plaque was carried out by Major General Harry J. Collins . A telegraph battalion and the command of the 350 Infantry Regiment were housed in the barracks. The Glasenbach POW Camp was also administered from Camp Truscott . In the gusset between Aignerstraße and Glasenbachstraße, a USFA military airfield for light liaison aircraft was also set up in the first post-war period.

The importance of the barracks at the time is also reflected in the fact that General Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Camp Truscott in 1946 and held a parade.

Recent visits by former US soldiers show that the memory of Camp Truscott is still alive among US veterans.

Rainer barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces

With the signing of the Austrian State Treaty on May 15, 1955, the end of the military occupation of Salzburg came in sight. On October 15, 1955, Camp Truscott was handed over to the Austrian Armed Forces or administratively to the Federal Building Administration  II (today Federal Real Estate Company ).

After the barracks were returned to Austria, they became a training barracks. At that time there was also a military training area on the southeastern foothills of the Gaisberg in the direction of the Schwaitlalm to the barracks . On October 1, 1956, two of the 15 companies of the Austrian Armed Forces stationed in Salzburg were housed in the Glasenbach barracks . The barracks had previously been repaired at considerable financial expense (8 million schillings).

In the Second Republic , the provisional Border Guard Department 8 became Feldjägerbataillon 29 (FjB 29), and on September 7, 1956, this was completely transferred to the Glasenbach barracks. FjB 29 took over the tradition of the Rainer regiment and so the Glasenbach barracks was renamed Rainerkaserne as early as 1960. In 1963 FjB 29 became the training regiment 8 ("Rainer" was called it unofficially until 1967, officially by decree from 1967).

Brigade Medical Company 8 followed on September 28, 1956, and the Army Medical Service was added as a supply unit. Furthermore, the military hospital for Salzburg was housed in the Rainer barracks.

The post office was temporarily housed in the command building of the barracks.

The Military Music Salzburg was also quartered in the Rainerkaserne from its foundation in 1956 until the beginning of 2011. Due to the notoriously limited space available and the planned sale of the barracks, an intensive search was made from 2008 onwards for a new home for the band, which was found in the Schwarzenberg barracks . Here, contemporary rooms were created for the 62 musicians in a newly adapted building, around a 170 m² concert rehearsal hall, eight registers and 33 soloist rehearsal rooms. The Military Music Salzburg has around 160 assignments per year all over Austria and several Kapellmeister, Landeskapellmeister and orchestral musicians (among others with the Vienna Philharmonic ) have emerged from its ranks .

From the training regiment 8 the Landwehr trunk regiment 82 (1979) and after the dissolution of the Landwehr trunk regiments the Jägerregiment 8 (1994) emerged. This was dissolved on March 31, 1999 in the course of the army regrouping. The command company of the command of the land forces and the training company of the Salzburg military command were adopted with a ceremony on Thursday, November 23, 2006. Large parts of the cadre were transferred to the staff support platoon, the future support element for the parts of the armed forces command in Salzburg. As of January 1, 2007, the training company will be subordinate to the Salzburg Pioneers in Pioneer Battalion 2.

The one-year volunteers from the Salzburg military command were still stationed in the Glasenbach barracks.

In the Rainer barracks, buildings have repeatedly been made available for external use.

  • The Rainer barracks became the alternative quarters for the HTL Hallein in 2006 , as the theory building there had to be demolished in 2007 and rebuilt. The transitional quarters in the barracks existed from autumn 2006 to autumn 2008.
  • On February 1, 2010, 50 police students moved into the rooms of the former medical training company I. The infrastructure of the barracks, which had been lying fallow since 2008 (lecture halls, sports hall, dining room, lounges and accommodation) could be used for these purposes, with space for up to 150 people. The Armed Forces provided the Police Security Academy (SIAK: Education Center of the Security Executive Salzburg - Elsbethen Branch) with an object in the Rainer barracks with accommodation and a classroom for around two years. This usage is still relevant today.
  • By April 2012, alternative quarters were provided in the barracks for refugee children of the SOS Clearing House. These were refugee children from all over the world who came to Austria without their parents. After a 10-month guest stay in the barracks, the children were able to move to the newly adapted clearing house of the SOS Children's Village in Aigen in April 2012 .
  • The Army Hospital of the Rainerkaserne was chosen in 2012 for the film Another Day in Paradise , which was filmed with Christine Reiler , Miss Austria 2007 and a doctorate in medicine.
  • Selective uses of the Rainer barracks included a. In 2007 the international decontamination workshop with representatives of authorities, hospitals, emergency organizations and companies from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, in 2008 the preparation of soldiers in the command area of the Salzburg military command for the first match day in the EM stadium in Wals-Siezenheim (100 Man of a patient carrier company and other specialists in patient decontamination, NBC defense company of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Brigade also with 100 soldiers in the Rainer barracks, 40 medical soldiers as reinforcement of the Red Cross and the fire brigade at the joint base of the Salzburg professional fire brigade) or 2012 the Implementation of the federal exercise of the MALTESER Hospitaldienst Austria .

Rainer barracks today

After initial considerations, the entire Rainer barracks should have been placed under protection. But this did not happen - also for financial reasons; however, substantial parts of the barracks have been placed under monument protection. These include the magnificent gate entrance with a marble portal, the buildings along Halleiner Landesstraße , the farm building with the dining room, the team buildings, the medical facility, the horse pond and the sports hall.

In 2012, SIVBEG, the real estate company of the Ministry of Defense, initiated the sale of the Rainer barracks, which has been discussed since 2008. For the 17 hectare site, however, the spatial development concept (REK) had to be adapted and a zoning and development plan had to be developed before construction work could begin. In a multi-stage bidding process for the barracks site, Red Bull GmbH was awarded the contract at the end of October 2012 with a bid of EUR 23.5 million. The new company and media headquarters are to be built on the site by the end of 2020. At the beginning of 2018, the renovation had already progressed so far that 500 Red Bull employees had their jobs here.
