Rainer Wulff (born February 8, 1943 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist and author of satirical texts. He was also the stadium announcer at FC St. Pauli .

Life

He worked for Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) for 37 years , most recently as head of the service. During his studies, Wulff worked as a reporter in the Kiel state studio and was a member of the state press conference. He was also a correspondent and freelancer for various newspapers (including Frankfurter Rundschau ). In 1972 he was hired by NDR as an editor. In that year he experienced the Olympic Games in Germany as a radio reporter. A little later he made talk shows public in Germany's media landscape: Wulff hosted the first public radio talk show, which was regularly broadcast on NDR for many years from Kiel and Hamburg.

During this time, Wulff was able to distinguish himself primarily as a reporter and commentator on current events. a. also in the daily broadcasts of the NDR's main political department such as “Kurier am Mittag” or “Das Echo des Tages”. He was also part of the team for the “5 Uhr-Club” series, which soon achieved cult status, especially among young people, with its mix of rock and pop music as well as contributions on politics, school, training and youth culture.

In 1978, Wulff relocated his office to Hamburg, where he was initially active in youth radio, from 1981 onwards as head of the NDR magazine editorial department (entertainment department), among other things responsible for daily magazine broadcasts and also for the organization and moderation of major events broadcast live (e.g. the annual NDR 2 New Year's Eve parties with up to 20,000 visitors).

In 1989 a new chapter began: Wulff switched to the cultural program (NDR 3, today: NDR Kultur ) and soon became head of duty there. He also headed the opera editorial team. In 1991 he founded the “Start” series, live broadcasts with outstanding young artists from the music academies in Hamburg, Berlin, Lübeck, Hanover and Rostock, which he - together with Kerstin Janse - also did in 69 episodes from Hamburg, Lübeck, Hanover, Rostock and Berlin moderated. Wulff passed on his journalistic and organizational experience as a lecturer in the field of cultural management at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater .

After retiring in 2003, Wulff took to the stage as a presenter at opera galas and singing competitions. a. in the State Operas Hamburg and Hanover, the Hamburg Laeiszhalle (music hall), the Kiel Opera and at the Eutin Festival . The voice expert has also been in demand as a jury member in national and international singing competitions (including in Vienna, Dresden, Frankfurt a. M. and Berlin) since the early 1990s. Until the end of 2019, he was also the director and organizer of the Maritime Music Prize, a competition that has been held every December since 2000 as part of the “Maritime Music Week” in Timmendorfer Strand, attracting the best international students in the singing classes of the music academies in Hamburg, Lübeck and Rostock (since 2014 also in Hanover , since 2015 also Bremen) with high cash prizes and engagements. After his retirement for reasons of age, the future of this established competition is uncertain. Wulff was and is volunteer and advisory in cultural committees.

With his satirical texts, Rainer Wulff presents himself at readings a. a. on cabaret stages in northern Germany. In November 2014 he published his first audio book on the Hamburg label Grand Hotel van Cleef . "Dry and always to the point. The worst thing about 'From Round to Square' is actually that it stops at some point because it could go on forever." (Deepground). "The police would have to forbid this audio book. Listening to it is much more dangerous than using your mobile phone while behind the wheel. At some point the listener could lose control of his car from laughing out loud." (Lübeck News)

Wulff's private passion belongs to FC St. Pauli . From 1986 to 2017 he was a volunteer stadium announcer at FC St. Pauli, the "voice of the Millerntor". He has "matured into an icon of FC St. Pauli over the years, a recognized and almost moral institution of the club" and, according to Welt am Sonntag, has "kept his style uninfluenced by fashion trends". Because he does not like the different and often incorrect pronunciation of player names ("a question of respect!"), Wulff has had a list of complicated names of players in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga and their correct pronunciation since the 2015/16 season his website (www.statz-wulff.de), partly connected with an audio version. He will continue to update this file regularly.
