Raja Rao

Raja Rao (* 8. November 1908 in Hassan , Mysore , India , † 8. July 2006 in Austin , Texas ) was an Indian novel writer .

Life

Raja Rao was born into a brahmin family. After successfully studying at Nizam's College in Hyderabad and the Islamic University, he went to France in 1929 , where he studied in Montpellier and at the Sorbonne . In 1939 he returned to India. After 1948 he lived alternately in India, Europe and the USA. From 1966 to 1980 he taught Indian philosophy and Buddhism at the University of Austin , Texas .

Together with Mulk Raj Anand and RK Narayan, Rao is considered to be the founder of English-language fiction in India . In his first novel Kanthapura from 1938 he portrayed the struggle for independence against the British from the perspective of a south Indian village. His last work was a biography of Mahatma Gandhi ; it was published in 1998 under the title Great Indian Way .
