Ralph Hutchinson

Ralph Hutchinson (born February 25, 1925 in Newcastle upon Tyne , † July 7, 2008 in Wauwatosa , Wisconsin ) was a British jazz trombonist .

Life

Hutchinson, whose father was a flautist in the BBC orchestra, first learned the piano before switching to the trombone in 1943 . First he played in England in the band of Tommy Sampson , which played mostly dance music and was broadcast on the BBC; small groups of musicians from the band also played bebop . He came to the USA in 1948 and worked in a factory for gramophone needles in Chicago, where he also played jazz in small clubs. He worked first with Bill Russo , then with Herbie Fields . He was best known as a member of the band of Muggsy Spanier , to which he belonged from 1951 to 1956. He then worked in the broadcast orchestras of NBC , CBS and ABC . In 1959 he received an offer to play with Louis Armstrong , which he refused for family reasons. In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 1951 and 1955. In the early 1960s he was in the band of the Jackie Gleason Show for four years . He later worked as a musician and professional golfer in Florida.
