Ralph Tepel (* 1964 in Celle ) is a German artist who deals with photography , painting , sculpture and sound art projects.

Life

Tepel already dealt with artistic subjects in his youth, painting, drawing and creating his first plastic works and sculptures. After graduating from the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium , from 1983 he studied not only Protestant theology but also design and art in Wuppertal , Heidelberg and Bonn . From 1995 to 1997 he was a master student of Alfons Engling, who had returned to Cologne from São Paulo .

In 1995 he met Helmut Tollmann in Cologne , with whom he has a deep friendship and with whom he worked as an assistant from 1998 to 2006. The multilayer technique developed by Helmut Tollmann, with the combination of printing and photography , fascinated him very much and has an impact on his work today.

Since 2018 he has been the Artistic Director of the Museum of Japan and Contemporary Art - Mitsuko Castle.

As an artistic photographer, Ralph Tepel was a member of the American Society of Picture Professionals and the Adobe Photographers Directory for several years. His work was published today in Volume 1 of Artistic Photography. In 2007 and 2008 Ralph Tepel lived and worked in Calgary , Alberta . A wealth of new photographic works was created there. The exhibition and book project “inspired by music” found its first climax in Calgary: photographs of ensembles from the genres of classical , jazz and world music , which were taken over more than a decade.

Since Ralph Tepel had presented a series of paintings about the “Faces of the Basic Law” in the years 2004–2006, Christian Kiefer made him the music and art project “Of Great and Mortal Men” by J. Matthew Gerken, Christian Kiefer and Jefferson Pitcher invited over the 44 presidents of the USA and contributed the picture “ Richard Nixon ”.

After moving the studio to Solingen , the search for new forms of expression began under the constant leitmotif of freedom . The political accents in his painting and sculpture focused on the topic of the destruction of freedom through digitization and economization. These works were presented in the Kornelius Gallery in early 2015.

The death of his father and his own serious accident in 2014 marked a profound change in his life and work. He dealt intensively with the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and found a new visual language that brought him to the "Mythspiel" based on Ludwig Wittgenstein's "Sprachspiel" and Roland Barthe's "Myths of Everyday Life". In 2015, Peripheral Arteries published an interview with a large photo series. Playing with information and layers of images led him to his new "playground", the erasure of information through overlay.
