Ramanand Sagar

Ramanand Sagar (actually Ramanand Shankardas Chopra ; born December 29, 1917 in Lahore , Punjab , † December 12, 2005 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian writer, director and producer of Hindi films .

Life

Ramanand Sagar had his first contact with film in 1936 when he assisted HS Thakur on his Hindi film Raiders of the Rail Road . From 1936 to 1942 he worked as a journalist for the newspapers "Daily Milap" and "Daily Pratap". In 1942 he graduated in Sanskrit. In the 1940s he published more than 30 short stories under the names "Ramanand Chopra" and "Ramanand Bedi" until he decided to use the name "Ramanand Sagar". When India was partitioned in 1947, he moved to Bombay . He processed the atrocities he experienced in his novel Aur Insaan Mar Gaya (1948). Parts of his play Gaura were performed in 1951 by Prithviraj Kapoor in his Prithvi Theater under the title Kalakaar .

He had his breakthrough in the film business in 1949 as a writer for Raj Kapoor's Barsaat . From 1953 he directed himself under the banner of his own production company Sagar Art Corporation. Sagar was primarily a dialogue writer, but also wrote screenplays, including for SS Vasan's Hindi films Insaniyat (1955), Raj Tilak (1958) and Paigham (1959). In the early 1960s he was director of the films Ghunghat - for which Bina Rai received a Filmfare Award for best actress - and Zindagi for Vasan's film company Gemini Pictures . His most successful times as a filmmaker were in the 1960s and 70s. Of particular importance from his late work is the television series Ramayan , which he developed and ran from 1986 to 1988 in 91 parts of 30 minutes each on Doordarshan .

Ramanand Sagar received a Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue for Paigham , and his Aankhen (1968) received an award for Best Director . 2001 Sagar was honored with the Padma Shri .
