The Rançonnière is a small river in the Jura . In large parts it is the border river between Switzerland in the canton of Neuchâtel and France in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .
geography
course
The Rançonnière rises from a karst spring on the west side of the Col des Roches , southwest of Le Locle . Most of its water comes from the marshy plain on the other side of the mountain, which is closed off by the Col des Roches and is only a few meters higher. The Bied brook flowing there , which in the past drained partly away and partly into a nearby karst cave, in which mills ( cave mills from Le Locle ) were located for several centuries , has been fed to a hydroelectric power station in the central reaches of the Rançonnière since 1890 . The corresponding tunnel channel leaves the mountain near the Rançonnière source. From here the water flows in a pressure pipe parallel to the right of the river (length approx. 600 m, gradient approx. 80 m) to the power station. The water that used to flow through the cave mills of Le Locle only reached the Rançonnière from small karst springs in its lower reaches.
The Rançonnière flows to the northwest, initially about 80 m on Swiss territory and then for about 2.5 km as a border river with France. The power plant is located in the border area on the right, the Swiss bank. The mouth of the river in the Lac des Brenets, through which the Doubs flows, lies across the whole width of Swiss territory.
