Randale am Strand is the fifth studio album by the German rockabilly punk band Rumble on the Beach and was released on the Weser label in September 1993 . In 2016 the album was completely remastered and re-released by Bear Family Records as CD and 180g vinyl LP.

The history

In the spring of 1993, the German independent rockabilly punk band Rumble on the Beach made a record in German for the first time. The result was a CD, peppered with cover versions of German sung classics from the 50s and early 60s.

Among the band members, at the time consisting of Michael Ohlhoff , Frank Ullrich and Marc Mittelacher , there were initially some discussions about the pros and cons of a German-language production, but a democratic agreement was quickly reached to tackle the project.

childhood memories

The mother's records, from 'Glockengießer Rock' to 'Der Mann im Mond', were played on a small suitcase record player and that had a lasting, formative effect that was also decisive for this project. Because these are also the roots of Rumble on the Beach. Not only Gene Vincent , Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley , but also Conny Froboess , Peter Kraus and Ted Herold , as well as the personal experiences of the time, the late 80s and early 90s, tour experiences in Germany, including the former GDR, played an equally intense role, as did the sphere of influence of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) and the so-called German punk.

The selection of songs

Subjectively, more or less well-known German titles from the period between 1956 and 1963 were selected, including two songs by the German singing Englishman Billy Sanders and the Ted Herold title 'Ich need' kein Ring ', a song originally by Elvis Presley ('Wear My Ring Around Your Neck') dates back to 1957 and hit the charts again in a Nashville version of country singer Ricky Van Shelton in the early 1990s .

The recording sessions

The recordings were made in the Sundance Studio in Bremen . The premises of the studio offered the band a unique atmosphere, which was also supported by the sociable manner of the studio boss Stefan Ulrich. The conditions were perfect. This was also reflected in the quality of the teamwork. The songs were recorded live in the studio, only vocal tracks and soloists were added afterwards. A number of guest musicians were honored. They were all the so-called 'icing on the cake' of the 'Randale am Strand' project and gave the various songs an additional flair. Gudrun Struck on the accordion came to the recordings from Hamburg and played the accordion in a special way. She moved between the traditional Cajun music from Louisiana and the squeeze chest of drawers from the pints of the Hamburg port. The Bremen jazz pianist Johannes 'Johnson' Waehneldt joined them, as well as three additional guitarists, Andreas Linke, Matzi Hagenah and Tammo Lüers, who gave the recordings a variety. Also there was Marten Ulrich on saxophone, Evelyn Gramel for the female backing vocals, as well as the first and current bassist Andy Merck.

Résumé

The record was released under the title 'Randale am Strand' on the Bremen Weser label by Claus Fabian . In keeping with this, the band went on tour, but the signs of the times stood in the way of the 'Rumbles' continuing to act. Family joys forced Rumble on the Beach to pause. As a result, the CD received less attention after its release. 23 years after the first release, the re-release label Bear Family Records took care of the 'forgotten' record and released it again in 2016, on CD and for the first time on a 180 gram vinyl record.

criticism

  • Country Jukebox ... The work entitled Randale Am Strand has been filled with a wild, totally relaxed mixture of old German hits and cover versions of well-known classics, which were simply given a perfectly fitting rockabilly / punk outfit.
  • MINT Magazin (01/2017, p. 140) : ... The band's typical rockabilly sound is varied here and there, especially country and cowpunk can be heard, the pieces are then called I stand at the bar and don't have one Money or Brown Bear and White Dove. Because punk is part of the DNA at Rumble On The Beach, the sound is sometimes rough.
  • Music circus - Stefan Schelle ... Can such a selection of songs and music still ignite today? I can only say a bold “yes” to that.
