Alexander "AJ" Ginnis (born November 17, 1994 in Athens , Greece ) is an American ski racer of Greek descent. He specializes in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . At the Junior World Championships in 2015 , he won the bronze medal in slalom.

biography

Childhood and youth

AJ Ginnis was born in Greece and grew up in Vouliagmeni , a seaside resort south of Athens. His father ran a ski school on Parnassus , which enabled him to ski for the first time at the age of two. He spent part of his childhood in Kaprun in Austria , where he started racing. Looking for a professional skiing career, AJ moved to Vermont when he was 15 , where he enrolled at Green Mountain Valley School, a school specializing in skiing. Prominent graduates include AJ Kitt and Daron Rahlves . Ginnis is now studying at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire .

Career

AJ Ginnis won his first FIS race at the age of 16 . In spring 2012 he was accepted into the development team of the US Ski Association before he was canceled the coming season after a cruciate ligament rupture . While still convalescing , he failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Sochi . After the unexpected death of his father, he raised $ 25,000 through fundraising to continue his career. On December 22, 2014 he made his World Cup debut in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio . After that he was used more and more in the Nor-Am Cup and the European Cup . At the US Ski Championships in Sugarloaf in 2015 he only had to admit defeat to David Chodounsky and became runner-up in slalom. After several slalom races, he qualified for the second round of a World Cup race for the first time on December 22nd, 2016 with the high start number 58 in Madonna. After finishing 13th in the first run, he finished 26th and won his first World Cup points. At the end of the season he won the American slalom championship.
