Rando

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rando was an Alemannic district king in the 4th century .

In 368 Rando attacked the city of Mogontiacum (today's Mainz), where a festival of the Christian religion (probably Easter or Pentecost ) was being celebrated. Since Emperor Valentinian I was in Trier with his troops , Rando was able to steal people and household effects without hindrance.

After a campaign against the Breisgauer , who had become leaderless after the murder of their King Vithicab , Emperor Valentinian led a campaign of revenge against Rando. This entrenched himself with his troops on a fortress on the heights and fought an eventful battle with the Romans , in which the emperor was almost killed by an ambush by Rando. In the end, however, Valentinian won.
