Leuthari I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leuthari (* unknown; † 554 ) was an Alemannic duke from 536 until his death . He was a brother of Butilin .

Leuthari and Butilin are considered to be the first dukes of the Alamanni who received their authority from the Frankish King Theudebert I and were politically dependent on him.

In 553/554 there was an unsuccessful Franconian campaign of conquest against the Roman general Narses in Italy , with the Alemannic participation of the two brothers Leuthari and Butilin. The campaign led from the Po Valley to the Strait of Messina . In retrospect, the Byzantine poet and historian Agathias tried to blame the two brothers for this failure in order to put the Frankish king in a better light. They would have let themselves be carried away by the Goths on this campaign, although it did not suit their King Theudebald . Other sources speak of a Franconian company.

This was the last attempt at conquest south of the Alps with Alemannic participation.
